In addition to the beautiful and majestic landscape and the pristine ocean, Liberty Cove has a rich history and culture behind it. The story of Lola Casanova is part of Liberty Cove's history and as a legend in the folklore of the Seri Indians. Lola Casanova was captured by the Seri Indian chief Coyote-Iguana while passing up the coastline from Guaymas. Though Lola was essentially a prisoner of the tribe, he vowed to care for her and make her the queen of the tribe.Soon, Lola learned the traditions and the Seri dialect and became part of the tribe. Finally in desperation, Coyote-Iguana lost all hope of winning over the heart of Lola and agreed to have Lola escorted back to her people, and at which point, Lola finally realized that she loved him and refused to go. Romantic stories like these are part of the history of Liberty Cove as well as the neighboring town of Puerto Libertad. What started as a small fishing village, similar to Cabo San Lucas, has expanded to a population of over 3000 with the CFE powerplant as a source of jobs for many that live there. |
